What fuel does your vehicle use?
Why is there no hybrid option?
Hybrids use technology to improve fuel efficiency, so all we need from you is the distance you’ve travelled, your fuel economy and fuel type to calculate the emissions.
If you have a plug-in hybrid, you’ll also be using electricity each time you plug in. You’ll need to use the energy tab to tell us about this – see notes on calculating the emissions from an electric vehicle.
How do I calculate emissions from an electric vehicle?
Electric vehicles create emissions from the electricity used when you plug them in.
Information from the manufacturer should tell you how many kWh you’re likely to use each time you charge the vehicle.
Simply multiply the number of times you’ve charged the vehicle by the kWh used each time, then input that figure in the energy tab. We’ll calculate the associated emissions for you – note these will vary by country, according to the fuel mix in the grid.
Remember - if you charge your vehicle at home, and have already offset your home energy use, you don’t need to add this twice.
Information about your vehicle's fuel economy
To find out your vehicle fuel economy consult the log book or the manufacturer. Or, you can use the following assumptions.
Petrol (gasoline)
An average small petrol car has a fuel economy of 39 MPG (UK average)
An average medium petrol car has a fuel economy of 31 MPG (UK average)
An average large petrol car has a fuel economy of 21 MPG (UK average)
Diesel
An average small diesel car has a fuel economy of 51 MPG (UK average)
An average medium diesel car has a fuel economy of 42 MPG (UK average)
An average large diesel car has a fuel economy of 32 MPG (UK average)
If fuel economy is not specified, a default fuel economy of 37.8 MPG (UK) will be applied (average for cars in the UK).
These figures are based on UK averages as per Guidelines to Defra / DECC's GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting.
Information on your electricity usage
If you do not know how much electricity you use, you can use the following as a guide:
- Small house 2,000kWh per year
- Medium house 3,200kWh per year
- Large house 4,900kWh per year
If you use electricity for night storage heaters and your hot water, please double these figures
If you are on a "green electricity" tariff, you may choose to leave this blank.
When calculating your emissions from the amount that you spend, the calculation is based on typical UK energy costs from the UK Energy Saving Trust, so the cost option is only available for UK residents.
Figures are derived from Guidelines to Defra / DECC's GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting
Information on your gas usage
If you do not know how much gas you use, you can use the following as a guide:
- Small house 9,000kWh per year
- Medium house 13,500kWh per year
- Large house 19,000kWh per year
Figures are taken from Guidelines to Defra / DECC's GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting
Information on your bottled gas usage
If you use bottled gas and wish to include this in your offset please enter the volume you have used. We use an emissions figure per litre provided by Defra.
Information on your heating oil usage
If you use heating oil and wish to include this in your offset please enter the volume you have used. We use an emissions figure per litre provided by Defra.

Why do you ask for the purpose of the fuel?
For completeness of records for company reporting, you can add the purpose for which you are consuming on site fuel using the dropdown list. However this is not essential and will not affect the emissions calculation.
Information on your renewable energy usage
We recommend purchasing a green energy certificate or offset to cover all your electricity use. Purchasing your electricity through a green tariff is a step in the right direction. However, because of the way our electricity system is set up, it doesn’t always mean the electricity you consume is 100% renewable. Whilst your contract for green energy encourages investment in renewables, this often helps suppliers and governments meet their legal obligations to green the national grid, rather than funding additional green energy provision.
Information on office space energy usage
Energy consumption is calculated using factors from the UK Association for Conservation of Energy, then converted using factors from Defra/DECC reporting Guidance.
How do I enter my event travel details?
Events emissions are calculated as a combination of travel and hotel impacts. Enter passengers in groups according to the type of transportation they used and average distance they travelled.
Public transport emissions are calculated using an average of national rail and local bus factors.
Car emissions are calculated using a default fuel economy of 37.8 MPG (UK average), and will be assumed to be a weighted average of 66.7% petrol (gasoline), 32.7% diesel, and 0.6% LPG. This distribution is derived from the UK Department for Transport's Vehicle Licensing Statistics: 2012.
Conversion factors are taken from DEFRA/Decc reporting Guidance.
How do I enter my event accommodation details?
Events emissions are calculated as a combination of travel and hotel impacts. Enter your guests in groups according to the type of accommodation (e.g. standard vs luxury room) they used.
Hotel room energy usage has been derived from a study prepared for the US Environmental Protection Agency.
If the venue is able to tell you how much electricity/fuel you have used, please input this in the energy tab.
Conversion factors are taken from DEFRA/Decc reporting Guidance.
Offsetting an event as a gift?
If you are purchasing carbon offsets as a gift you will be to provide recipient details and a message when you check out.
Company business name
Please enter your company name here - this will be used on WorldPay's payment form if you proceed with your purchase. We like to understand our customer base, but you can be sure that we will not provide your company information to 3rd parties or for our newsletter distribution (unless you request us to).
Business contact name
Please enter the most appropriate contact email here for your business. This will be used on WorldPay's payment form if you proceed with your purchase, and we will send your certificate to this address. You can be sure that we will not provide your company information to 3rd parties. This is not an automatic sign-up for our business newsletter distribution (though you can request this on our business pages).
About other business emissions
For any emissions that our calculator doesn’t cover, please enter the tonnage and it will be added to your emissions calculation. For help with calculations, or if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the ClimateCare team by email at business@climatecare.org or by phone on +44 (0)1865 591000.
What does the gift option do?
If you are purchasing carbon offsets as a gift, we can incorporate a special message to the offset certificate that will be mailed to you after check out. You will receive your receipt separately from the offset certificate, so that you can forward the certificate to the recipient. A "From: " field will be populated on the offset certificate with the name (or organisation) you provide on the next (payment) screen.
If you are not purchasing carbon offsets as a gift you can ignore these fields. You will receive a combined offset certificate and receipt.
Company car information
You can use this calculator to add company car mileage and emissions individually, or select a fuel type then add the total miles driven by your company for that fuel type.
This allows you to calculate an entire fleet at once, or vehicle by vehicle if it is important to you to separate this out.
What if I don't know the type of fuel used?
If you do not know the type of fuel used you can select 'Unknown' as your fuel type. Your fleet will be assumed to be a weighted average of 66.7% petrol (gasoline), 32.7% diesel, and 0.6% LPG. This distribution is derived from the UK Department for Transport's Vehicle Licensing Statistics: 2012.
Business travel by public transport
With this calculator you can offset business travel by:
- Bus
